SHUSH Sounds from UCC Library 30 April 2018

The podcast of this week’s show can be found here. Enjoy.

The playlist, the music without all the talk of Ronan and Martin, can be found here.

Martin’s track of the week is Dear Girl, I wanna be your Girlfriend by Chinese band Hedgehog Read here to see why

Ronan’s Track of the week is Shake some action by The Flamin Groovies. Check out why here

Our recommended exhibition of the week is obviously the Andy Summers Exhibition currently running in Boole Library.

And our recommended read of the week is the latest post via Colm O’Callaghan, of The Blackpool Sentinel, where he tells us about the day that The Rolling Stones came to visit Cork, Belfast and Dublin in 1965. We choose this piece as it led us to play an excellent track from The Stones on today’s show as well as an excellent track by Twinkle, their support act.

My track of the week for this week comes courtesy of a brilliant indie band all the way from Beijing. This band are called Hedgehog. Regular listeners to Shush will know I have a soft spot for Chinese rock – born of a time in 2014 when I spent nearly two months in the country. I was rather surprised to see such a vibrant rock, indie, punk scene in the  country. I shouldn’t have been. Nothing should surprise you about such a vast country.

Hedgehog for me are one of the best Chinese indie rock bands out there – influenced by Jesus & Mary Chain, doo wop and other shoe gaze, noise bands their sound can be infectious and joyous. No more than on the 2015 single Dear Boy, I wanna be your Girlfriend (I have no idea why there is what looks like an Irish band playing the intro of the video.)
